A Gift, Not a "Glitch"
I have to weigh in on the current story regarding statements made about a community very dear to me.
I have to weigh in on the current story circulating on social media regarding statements made about a community very dear to me:
Be intentional with your words.
Given my struggles with depression and OCD diagnosis, I’m sensitive to the words “crazy,” “insane,” and the like, when other words work better (and are actually more descriptive).
For many years, I have also been sensitive to the “R word.” I have a cousin with Down Syndrome. I love him so very much. He is a true blessing, and definitely not a “glitch.”
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is a lie straight from the seventh circle. Words can, and do, hurt. Take it from me, a kid who was bullied because of her differences.
Yes, I am fiercely pro-life, and I am fiercely “people first” language; fiercely “kindness matters;” and fiercely proud of those with developmental differences, the neurodivergent, those with mental health issues, and other conditions who fight harder than many may ever know or understand.
All of James chapter 3 is good, but I leave you with these words:
“With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.” -- James 3:9
